F-1 job search guide

OPT job search for F-1 students

This is career support, not immigration legal advice. Rules change. Confirm dates and eligibility with your Designated School Official (DSO) and USCIS. DM Growth Partners does not file immigration forms, and does not guarantee a job, OPT approval, or sponsorship.

What an OPT job search is

An OPT job search is looking for a US job related to your major during Optional Practical Training. For many F-1 students that search starts near the end of a program, when the usual path is post-completion OPT.

The search itself is a job hunt: a US resume, a short way to talk about work authorization, a list of employers who hire international students, and a weekly plan for applications and follow-ups. It is not a visa filing.

The usual window

Optional Practical Training is commonly 12 months of work related to your major. Post-completion OPT is the usual path after you finish your program, with an application window around your program end date and a limit on days without a job.

Those dates are not something to guess from a blog. Confirm the window, the unemployment limit, and whether your job has to be related to your major with your Designated School Official before you rely on a date.

What to prepare before you apply

A US-format resume with no photo, a LinkedIn profile a recruiter can skim, and one or two honest sentences for the question “Will you now or in the future need sponsorship?” On the resume, skip the photo and add a short work-authorization line.

Then give the search a pace. A timeline tied to your program end date, plus a small set of applications and follow-ups for the week, is more useful than an endless scroll. Every date still needs a check with your DSO.

Where to look

We do not hand you a made-up list of sponsors. A practical method is your campus career center and Handshake, postings that do not require you to never need sponsorship, public H-1B disclosure data as research, E-Verify employers when you are aiming at STEM OPT, career fairs, and alumni referrals.

What this guide does not do

DM Growth Partners helps with the job search: timelines in plain language, resumes, interviews, and where to look. We do not file OPT forms, review an I-20 as a legal service, or guarantee a job, OPT approval, or sponsorship.

Common questions

What is an OPT job search?

An OPT job search is looking for a US job related to your major during Optional Practical Training. We help F-1 students with that search: timelines, work authorization conversations, US resumes, interviews, and where to look for employers. We do not provide immigration legal advice, file forms, or guarantee a job or sponsorship.

Do you file OPT forms?

No. We do not file OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, or any other immigration forms, and we do not review an I-20 as a legal service. Ask your DSO, and a qualified immigration attorney when you need legal advice.
