How to answer the sponsorship question

This is career support, not immigration legal advice. Rules change. Confirm dates and eligibility with your Designated School Official (DSO) and USCIS. DM Growth Partners does not file immigration forms, and does not guarantee a job, OPT approval, or sponsorship.

The question on the application

Many applications ask, “Will you now or in the future need sponsorship?” Answer in one or two honest sentences. A typical shape: you are authorized to work on OPT for a defined period, and you may need sponsorship later if you and the employer want to continue.

The exact wording depends on your status. We coach the conversation. We do not tell you what you are legally allowed to do.

The line on a US resume

On a US resume, skip the photo and add a short work-authorization line. Keep the rest of the resume easy for a recruiter and an applicant-tracking system to skim: a clear target role, experience related to that role, and no personal details a US resume does not need.

LinkedIn should say the same thing in the same plain language, so the application and the profile do not contradict each other.

Practice it before a recruiter asks

Mock interviews are for the role and for this question. Say the one or two sentences out loud until they sound like you, not like a template. If you freeze on the form, the interview will be harder.

What we will not hand you

We will not hand you a made-up list of companies that sponsor. We teach a method: campus career center and Handshake, how to read postings, public H-1B disclosure data, E-Verify employers for STEM OPT, career fairs, and alumni. A coaching answer is not a legal opinion.

Common questions

How should I answer whether I will need sponsorship?

In one or two honest sentences. Many students on post-completion OPT can work for a period without a new petition, and may need sponsorship later if they stay. The exact wording depends on your status. We coach the conversation. We do not tell you what you are legally allowed to do.

Can you give me a list of companies that sponsor?

We will not hand you a made-up sponsor list. We teach a method: campus career center and Handshake, how to read postings, public H-1B disclosure data, E-Verify employers for STEM OPT, career fairs, and alumni.
